Foodies Flock to Coastal Georgia for Annual Festival

Y’all, get hungry. Get thirsty. Get

ready for a few days of pure celebration. It’s time again for the 3rd annual St. Simons Food & Spirits Festival.

Unfolding Wednesday, Oct. 1 and lasting through Sunday, Oct. 5, this four-day foodie fest promises to liven guests’ sense with a showcase of the region’s best chefs, best dishes and yes, best drinks. Quickly becoming the Southeast’s go-to gastronomic wonder, the festival has earned several awards, including the 2013 Allie Award winner as the Southeast’s Best Public Festival.

Even better than the praise, though, is the festival real point: it’s all for a good cause, as the festival is a fund- and awareness-raising event for Hospice of the Golden Isles. At the 2014 event, guests can not only drink and eat their way through days of fun, they, too, can pick up a few cooking and tasting tips from professionals, such as Athens-based chef Hugh Acheson, owner of several acclaimed Georgia restaurants including Empire State South. Acheson, too, is a six-time James Beard Award nominee, is a frequent guest judge on Bravo TV’s cooking competition, “Top Chef,” has penned several books about eating seasonally and locally, was named Food & Wine magazine’s 2
002 Best New Chef and has been featured in a host of top-tier publications, including Bon Appétit, The New York Times, and Garden & Gun, among others.

In the personality big-wig category, Acheson will not be alone at the festival. Also at the event will be festival co-founders Griffin Bufkin and Harrison Sapp, owners of Southern Soul Barbeque; 20-time PGA Tour winner and Golden Isles resident Davis Love III; and a full roster of the finest chefs and food enthusiasts from the area. Scheduled guest appearances include Libbie Summers, Pat Martin, Carey Bringle, Aaron Siegel, Justin & Jonathan Fox, and Matthew Raiford.

Events scheduled throughout the four days include the Grand Oaks Tasting Tour, a Sip, a Taste and Tour Pier Crawl, an Evening Oyster Roast, and the SPIRITual Sunday Brunch.
