"She'll be coming around the mountain when she comes"- that refrain from a favorite old camp song reverberated in my ears as I made my annual quick trip to the Virginia Highlands. Those mountains call me home as they did my father so many years ago. Have to share one of the neatest up and coming preservation efforts in the state-Glade Spring, Virginia. Right off I-81 this charming little town square is bustling. Have to admit I'm prejudice, but my cousin Catherine Clarke is leading the way. Wonderful grant from the state of Virginia and the little town is humming. Civil War buffs will recognize the name General William "Grumble" Jones, who is buried in the old Glade Spring Presbyterian Church. Bob Porterfield, the founder of Barter Theatre in Abingdon, lived at "Twin Oaks."
Will keep you posted on the going ons at the Spring.
Fresh baked bread, a new restaurant, the old bank opening as an art gallery, first music festival held last weekend. The hills are alive with music.

Hosting my first giveaway on my blog Em's on the Road starting today! The winner will receive a signed copy of The Idiat and The Odd-yssey written by Harlan Hambright.  This book is a satirical trip around the world without leaving the state of Georgia that is "sometimes historic, sometimes informative, and almost always humorous!" Check out the blog for more info!

New historic district in Athens GA- Buena Vista Heights Historic District! Check out their facebook page to learn more.

About: Nestled at the upper end of Boulevard in Athens, Georgia, near downtown, Normaltown and the Navy School.

Our Facebook page has been set up to serve as a hub for the Buena Vista neighborhood and its plans to achieve historic district status in Athens.
This area northwest of downtown Athens was purchased by the Athens Park and Improvement Company in 1890, and prior to the purchase the area was sparsely developed as an African-American settlement with small vernacular housing. After its purchase, the neighborhood was laid out in a gridiron plan of streets with one main thoroughfare, serviced by a streetcar line running from the center of town.

“Historic schools link generations within a community.  Schools are also local landmark buildings–like county courthouses, city halls, and libraries,– which are monumental in architecture and rich in associative memories.” – W. Ray Luce
