St. Simons, Georgia is an ideal destination for a guys’ trip, especially among golf enthusiasts like my husband and son. But it is an equally perfect spot for a ladies’ gathering. Earlier this summer I spent a long weekend there with my off-to-college daughter and know that, as her dorm move-in day looms large, I am truly grateful to have had the time to share our SSI favorites.
One of our first stops on each trip is to the GJ Ford Bookshop where we browse the well-stocked shop and both pick up a new book for beach or poolside reading. I was delighted to see that the store recently received a grant from best-selling author James Patterson who is supporting independent bookstores by donating $1Million to help keep those shops alive.
Next we drive to Tibi, our favorite shopping spot. I love the variety and originality of the clothing line which includes pieces for both my 18-year old fashion forward daughter and also for me. I was fascinated to hear owner Amy Smilovic speak at The Southern C Summit last spring and I greatly admire her design sensibility and business success.
Right around the corner from Tibi is Fuse, a terrific place to create a customized frozen yogurt. I typically mix the sea salt caramel with vanilla, sprinkling on almond slivers and a few blueberries. Just writing about my favorite flavors makes me wish I was there right now.
I am also a fan of The Market where my daughter and I have developed a serious pimento cheese addiction. There is not one thing I wouldn’t love to take home with me from inside this beautiful store.
For a more substantial meal, Southern Soul BBQ and Bubba Garcia's occupy the #1 and #2 spots on my list. Growing up in Texas I developed a high standard for good BBQ and Mexican food and I have had my heart broken with mediocre executions while living in New York. I am never disappointed by these two.
For a total indulgence on this trip, I made spa appointments at The Cloister were we treated ourselves to a massage (my daughter) and facial (me.) The treatment rooms and relaxation areas are world class and I cannot recommend this highly enough.
The three days that we spent together went by in a heartbeat and soon we were joined by the rest of the family. In a few weeks, she will be far away from us in college, and I will be back home facing an empty nest for the very first time. Yikes! As her departure date grows near, I realize my good fortune to have had the time to share these things in this place that we both love. I am so happy we stole time for this mother-daughter getaway in SSI.
