At the end of Charlottesville's Downtown Mall is an outdoor pavilion, which is the warmer months is host to many great concerts and events.
This Thursday I will be headed there to see Needtobreathe, which got me thinking about Southern bands. The opening act for their show is a Nashville-based band, Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors, which I've heard before and really enjoyed.
I am a fan of the greats: Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss ... along with some country music from George Strait to Zac Brown Band and many other genres too.
It's fun to be a part of an age where great music is still being made. Here are a few of my favorite bands with connections to the South.
Here is Needtobreathe, a Charleston, SC band, performing last year at Charlottesville's Jefferson Theater.
The Avett Brothers have exploded into the national spotlight: I have been fortunate to see them a few times when they've come through Charlottesville, also at the pavilion. In case you didn't know, they originate from Concord, NC.
These are some friends of mine, The Hill and Wood. They are local to Charlottesville: definitely check them out as they have made some great music! And still more to come from them.
The Punch Brothers are led by Chris Thile, formerly of Nickel Creek. They have a great bluegrass sound.
Finally, even though she is not from the South, her songs resonate in a Southern, soulful way. Patty Griffin just released her new album, American Kid, yesterday. If you're into Americana, you already know and love Patty. If don't, definitely check it out!
I am a big believer in the sharing of music with friends: please tell me about bands I may not have heard of! I love expanding my musical tastes and knowledge. Leave a comment here!
